Do you use Scissors or Rotary Cutters?

Lets consider the pros and cons of both scissors and rotary cutters. They are an essential tool for cutting and sewing fabric but sometimes you might want to know why to have either or both.

As you know scissors have been around for like, forever. They have evolved into so many different types, sizes and shapes. Here are the advantages & disadvantages.

Advantages:

  • Scissors are common and easily available
  • They come in a variety of shapes to suit different hands
  • Are simple and easy to use
  • They can easily be sharpened with a scissor sharpener
  • They are available in different grips, great for people with sensitive hands
  • Available in different blade types such as pinking shears
  • Available for different mediums such as fabric, paper, card.
  • Can be precise when cutting small and intricate pieces
  • You don't need any extra equipment to use scissors

Disadvantages:

  • Cutting in straight lines may not be as easy as you think
  • Finishing may not be neat
  • May not be suitable to cut multiple layers of fabric

On the other hand rotary cutters have become more and more popular with craft enthusiasts using them for a variety of uses. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of using rotary cutters.

Advantages:

  • Perfect for cutting straight lines
  • A better handle on accuracy
  • Can cut multiple layers at once
  • Available in different grips, great for people with sensitive hands
  • Available for different mediums such as fabric, paper, card.

Disadvantages:

  • Can be expensive
  • Not widely available
  • Will need additional tools such as a cutting mat and ruler
  • Blades can be an additional expense
  • May take time to get used to

As a user of both scissors and rotary cutters, I started off with a sceptical view on rotary cutters but it turns out that there is no doubt a place for a rotary cutter in every sewists sewing box. So its safe to say that you should have both scissors and rotary cutters.

Although it may not be the first thing on your starter kit list, it may be something worth considering once you are on your feet and love sewing regularly. It will help elevate your sewing skills and prepare you for more advanced sewing.
